Iron Infusion
We provide a comprehensive iron infusion service.
Iron infusions are usually prescribed to treat iron deficiency ( low blood iron levels ) in rapid manner if you:
- don't have an adequate iron intake for a prolonged time
- can’t absorb iron adequately through the gut
- suffer from ongoing blood loss such as heavy periods
- need to increase iron levels fast to avoid medical complications or a blood transfusion
- cannot tolerate the side effects of oral iron supplements
An iron infusion involves the administration of iron via an intravenous line, allowing for quick absorption and replenishment of iron stores in the body.
This method is often used when oral iron tablets or supplements are ineffective or not tolerated well, such as for individuals with iron deficiency anaemia or chronic conditions that hinder iron absorption.
Overall, an iron infusion provides a fast and efficient way to ensure your body has enough iron and improve overall health.
The Process
This is a two step process that involves an initial consultation (in person or by phone) AND administration of the infusion. This can be shortened to a single in-person appointment if the initial consultation is done via telehealth.
A blood test form is emailed to you prior to your appointment (if the booking is made at least 72 hr prior). Please complete a fasting blood test at any Labtest facility prior to the appointment. It is useful, but not mandatory to have the blood test results available for discussion prior to your appointment.
During the initial consultation, our doctors will take a thorough history to elucidate the cause of your condition, discuss your blood test results (if available), and ascertain that the benefits of an iron injection are an appropriate option for you.
The doctor will apply for a special authority for this treatment to be funded; alternatively you may choose to pay for the cost of the iron privately (around $400+ for 2 bottles of iron).
On arrival to your iron infusion appointment, you will have a small IV drip placed in your elbow or back of your hand. Our doctor will administer a small test dose initially to ensure you don’t have any adverse reactions.
The rest of the iron will then be administered slowly over 15 minutes. Once the infusion is complete, please allow an additional 20 minutes for observation in the clinic to monitor for any reactions.
Please book an initial consultation before scheduling an iron infusion administration.
Note that an extra medication fee applies to the administration if you do not meet criteria for MOH funding.
You will fully monitored by the doctor administering the infusion. Please allow an additional 20 minutes observation period after the infusion is over.
