Ingrown Toenail Surgical Treatment

See post treatment care for this service.

We provide comprehensive care for foot-related ailments, including expert treatment for ingrown toenails.

Ingrown nails can be painful and debilitating, but with the right toenail treatment, we can help you find relief and prevent future complications.  Our state-of-the-art clinic foot specialists are dedicated to offering you the highest standard of medical care in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

What is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the toenail grows into the skin of the toe. This can cause pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. While ingrown toenails can affect any toe on your feet, they most commonly occur on the big toe.

Causes and Symptoms

Ingrown toenails can result from various factors, including improper toenail trimming, tight footwear, injury, or genetic predisposition. Symptoms typically include tenderness along the nail edge, swelling, redness, and in severe cases, pus drainage indicating an infection.

Our Approach to Treatment

At Ponsonby Doctors, we understand the discomfort and inconvenience caused by ingrown toenails. Our approach to treatment includes:

  • Assessment: A thorough examination of the affected toe to determine the severity of the ingrown toenail and any signs of infection.
  • Conservative Treatment: For less severe cases, ingrown toenail treatments may involve advice on proper nail care, soaking the foot to reduce swelling, and prescribing antibiotics if an infection is present.
  • Surgical Options: For more severe cases or recurrent ingrown toenails, surgical intervention may be necessary. Our skilled team performs minimally invasive procedures to remove the ingrown portion of the nail under local anesthesia.

This procedure is quick, with most patients experiencing immediate relief and a fast recovery. This option may be necessary for some cases of ingrown toenail in order to prevent a toenail infection or other potential foot problems.

Post-Surgery Care and Prevention

After surgery, we provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery. Tips for preventing future ingrown toenails include proper nail trimming techniques, wearing appropriately fitting shoes, and regular foot hygiene.

Taking regular and proper care of the skin and nails on your feet can reduce the risk of ingrown toenails and eliminate the need for a nail surgery procedure entirely. Ask your doctor about what you can do to avoid an ingrown toenail infection and fungal nail infections and learn to take proper care of your feet today.

Post-Treatment Care

First 24-48 Hours:

  • Rest: Limit physical activity to keep pressure off the treated foot. Elevating the foot above heart level when resting can help reduce swelling.
  • Wound Care: Keep the surgical dressing on and dry for the first 24-48 hours, or as instructed by your healthcare provider.
  • Pain Relief: You may experience mild pain or discomfort. Over-the-counter pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help manage this. Avoid aspirin as it may increase bleeding.
  • Swelling: To minimize swelling, you can apply an ice pack to the treated area, but ensure the dressing remains dry. Wrap the ice pack in a cloth and apply it for 10-15 minutes at a time.

After 48 Hours:

  • Dressing Change: If your healthcare provider advises, remove the initial dressing and replace it with a clean, dry one. Follow the provider’s instructions for how frequently to change it.
  • Foot Hygiene: Gently clean the treated area with warm water and mild soap, making sure to dry the area thoroughly. Avoid soaking the foot unless advised by your doctor.
  • Footwear: Wear open-toe or loose-fitting shoes to avoid pressure on the treated area. Closed, tight-fitting shoes should be avoided until the area has healed.
