New Zealand has declared a whooping cough ( pertussis ) epidemic,

Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can lead to serious complications, especially in infants and young children.

Here's what you need to know, and what you can do.

Who is most at risk?

  • Young children and babies under 12 months are especially vulnerable, with approximately 50% requiring hospitalization.
  • Older adults and those with weakened immune systems face increased risks of severe illness and complications from pertussis.
Complications can be life-threatening, and can include apnea (pauses in breathing), pneumonia, seizures and uncontrolled shaking, and encephalopathy which is a disease of the brain.

How to protect your family

Immunisation is the most important safeguard for you and your loved ones.

  • Anyone who will be around young children, babies, or elderly adults should immunize to protect their families.
  • Pregnant mothers should immunize from 16 weeks in the pregnancy to protect their child until the child is born and old enough to be vaccinated themselves.
  • Babies should be immunized at 6 weeks, 3 months and 5 months with pertussis boosters at 4 years and 11 years of age.

PCR tests for whooping cough

Early symptoms resemble a common cold but can progress to severe coughing fits. If you or your child exhibit symptoms, consult a healthcare provider promptly.

If you are concerned that you may have contracted Whooping Cough, especially before traveling, seek medical advice regarding PCR testing to confirm the diagnosis and prevent further spread.

PCR testing is available for those who have;

  • Respiratory symptoms compatible with pertussis
  • AND it has been less than 3 weeks since onset of coughing
  • AND the patient meets any one of the following criteria;
    • Less than 5 years of age
    • Pregnant person in the third trimester
    • Immunocompromised
    • In regular contact (e.g. lives/works) with children aged less than 5 years, for example attends an Early Childhood Centre
    • In regular contact (e.g. lives/works) with pregnant people
    • In regular contact (e.g. lives/works with immunocompromised people
