Keloid Scar Surgery

ALWAYS CALL 111
IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY

The doctors in our urgent care clinic are all skilled and experienced in dealing with all types of urgent medical care, "everything and anything" that comes in through the door.

When skin is injured, fibrous tissue called scar tissue forms over the wound to repair and protect the injury. In some cases, extra scar tissue grows, forming smooth, hard growths called keloids.

Keloid scars form to protect injured skin.

They can be much larger than the original wound, and are most commonly found on the shoulders, chest, cheeks and ears. Keloid causes can be from acne scars and scar treatment options include surgical excision.

The symptoms of a keloid can include:

  • a localized area that is flesh-colored, pink, or red
  • a lumpy or ridged area of skin that’s usually raised
  • an area that continues to grow larger with scar tissue over time
  • an itchy patch of skin

Keloid removals are often more of a cosmetic treatments concern than a health one. You may feel self-conscious if the keloid is very large or in a highly visible location, such as on an earlobe or the face.

Surgical Treatment

Keloid scar surgery involves surgically excising the excess scar tissue to restore a smoother and more natural appearance to the skin.

This procedure is often recommended for individuals who have keloids that are large, uncomfortable, or located in highly visible areas.

Surgical removal can significantly reduce the size and prominence of keloid scars, and in many cases, restore confidence by improving the overall appearance of the affected skin.

If you have a keloid scar you'd like to reduce or remove, book an appointment with us!

During your consultation, our specialist will evaluate the keloid, discuss your treatment options, and answer any questions you may have about the procedure.

What to Expect

During the surgery, our specialist carefully removes the keloid, taking precautions to minimize trauma to surrounding tissue.

This meticulous approach helps to reduce the likelihood of the keloid returning.

In most cases, a follow-up plan that may include steroid injections or other post-surgical treatments is put in place to further reduce the risk of recurrence.

Note - Upon booking, our staff will automatically generate a prescription for a steroid injection(s) should you choose to proceed after the consultation. This is sent to our clinic in time for your appointment. You do not have to pick up the medication or do anything else prior to your appointment.

Post-Treatment Care

After the surgical removal of a keloid, the area may feel slightly tender, and some redness or swelling is normal as the skin heals.

To speed your recovery and aid the healing process;

  • Keep the area clean and dry: Gently cleanse with mild soap and water. Avoid soaking the area.
  • Avoid sun exposure: Protect the treated area from the sun to prevent darkening of the scar. Apply sunscreen when exposed.
  • Apply prescribed treatments: Use any prescribed creams, gels, or dressings as directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid irritation: Avoid tight clothing or activities that may rub or put pressure on the treated area.
  • Monitor for changes: Watch for any signs of infection or changes in the scar, and follow up with your healthcare provider as needed.

We may also schedule follow-up visits to monitor healing and to administer any additional treatments, such as corticosteroid injections, which help reduce the chances of the keloid re-forming.
